Biography

Matthijs Fokkes Feenstra was born on 28 August 1881 in Bolsward. He and Antje Knorr were married on 12 August 1905 in Bolsward.
Matthijs Feenstra arrived in America on the 29 August 1905 on the steam ship Rotterdam sailing
from Rotterdam to start a new life. Matthijs was just 23 years old and only seventeen days married to
Antje Knorr. Matthijs was a carpenter by profession as was his father Fokke Rinkes Feenstra and
grandfather Rinke Fokkes Feenstra. Matthijs hoped to establish a carpentery business in Paterson,
New Jersey but was unsuccessful and returned to Bolsward in 1907. During this time Thijs and Antje's
daughter Grietje was born in Paterson, New Jersey in 1906. The Ellis Island immigration records give
the following details concerning Matthijs, anglocised name, Mathy Feenstra: 6' tall, dark hair and blue
18
eyes. Returning for a second time to America at the age of 27 years and with only $35 US dollars in his
pocket Mathijs arrived on the Steam Ship Potsdam sailing from Rotterdam and arriving at Ellis Island
on July 13, 1909. Matthijs was making a second attempt at establishing a carpentery business in
America. He traveled in the company of a 17 year old apprentice carpenter Dirk Veltman also of
Bolsward. According to the Ellis Island immigration records both indicated that they were going to
initially stay with Matthijs's brother inlaw Emke Knorr who lived at 50 Westerveld Avenue, Paterson,
New Jersey.
Mathijs's wife Antje who initially remained in Bolsward was to follow several months later. Families
often immigrated together during this era, although young men frequently came first to find work. Some
of these then sent for their wives, children, and siblings; others returned to their families in Europe with
their saved wages. The Ellis Island Emigration records show that Antje and three year old daughter
Grietje were passengers on the Steam Ship Nordam from Rotterdam to New York arriving in New York
on the 5 October 1909. Antje and her daughter Grietje were both classified as non immigrant aliens.
Antje was also in the company of her second cousin Tjipke Knorr. The Ellis Island records give the
following details concerning Antje, anglocised name Anna Feenstra: 29 years of age, 1.65m (5'6") tall,
blonde hair and blue eyes. On April 6, 1907 Matthijs's 21 year old brother Menno (5'4", fair hair, grey
eyes) came to stay with Matthijs and Antje. They were at this time living at 8th Street, Paterson New
Jersey.
Matthijs and Antje returned permanantly to Bolsward, Friesland sometime prior to the birth of their
second daughter Nieskje (Jikke) in 1912. Matthijs and Antje had a third child, a son called Gerard.
In Bolsward, Matthijs continued to work as a carpenter, a profession he was said to be very skilled at.
Matthijs inherited a sizeable family fortune in money and realestate. Antje passed away in 1947 and
Matthijs passed away in the 1950's. Their daughter Grietje married Arnoldus de Vries and had five
children. Matthijs and Antje's second daughter Jikke married Jacob Langenberg and had six children.
In 1959 Jikke and Jacob emigrated to Australia with their four youngest children to join their two sons
Herman and Matthijs (Martin) who had emigrated two years previous. Mathhijs and Antje's daughters
Grietje and Jikke both died of complications from diabettes as had their mother Antje.

Biography

Jacob (Jaap) Langenberg was born on 15 September 1913 in St Annaparochie. He and Nieskje (Jikke) Feenstra were married on 8 September 1934 in Bolsward. Jacob (Jaap) Langenberg died on 16 May 1965 at age 51 in Moe, Victoria, Australia.
Born in Sint Annoparochie, Jacob was the eldest of eight children born to Harm Langenberg
(printer/type-setter) and Trijntje Bouma. In his late teens Jacob tried his luck as a greengrocer in
Bolsward. With his goods on a flat top cart he would go from house to house peddling his goods as was
common practice at the time. Between the years of 18 to 20 Jacob served in the Dutch regular army a
compulsory requirement at the time. Five years later with the outbreak of war Jacob was once again
recruited into the army. As a result of the German bombing of Rotterdam the Netherlands capitulated in
1940. Jacob returned to Bolsward a civilian but was soon arrested by the Germans and like many able
young Dutchmen was sent to German Work Camps. Jacob was sent to a work camp in France frome
1942 -1943 and then to Germany from 1943 -1944 before being returned to Friesland where he was
sent to work digging trenches for the German occupiers. In the early months of 1945 Jacob's wife
Nieskje and her friend, whose husband was also in the same work camp, managed to rescue Jacob
from his captors making good their escape on bicycles. Returning to Bolsward Jacob spent many
restless nights hiding from the Germans. On nights when it was known that the Germans were
searching for young Dutchmen for their work camps Jacob would hide in a Bakers Cart in a warehouse
used by the local baker S I Faber. Jacob's son Herman remembers well the night the German Soldiers
came to there family home turning the place upside down in an unsuccessful search for his father. Prior
to and following the war Jacob was a factory worker and deputy in several departments at the Bolsward
dairy factory "Hollandia Ltd" (now owned by Nestle) a producer of milkproducts and foodstuffs (butter,
cream, condensed milk etc.).
In 1955 Jacob and Jikke's two eldest sons, Herman and Matthijs emigrated to Australia. In 1959 Jacob,
Jikke and their remaining children also emigrated to Australia. Jacob found employment with the State
Electricity Commission (SEC) in Yallourn, Victoria as a muncipal worker. On the 16 May 1965 Jacob
was killed in an automobile accident, the other vehicle driven by a drunk driver. Jikke re-married some
years later to Jaap van der Ley. Jikke passed away on the 22nd December 1994 as a result of
complications from diabettes. Both Jikke's mother Antje and sister Grietje had also died as a result of
diabettes.
